Balkan Vinyl – news

July 5th, 2010

As of Monday 5th July 2010, the Balkan Vinyl series subscriptions have officially sold out.

Rubadub and other shops will be stocking a small number of individual copies of Orange and Violet in the coming weeks, otherwise, the entire series can still be bought digitally (we recommend Boomkat, Juno Download, or Bleep)

Most of the final subs have now been shipped, just a small handful left to go.  If you don’t have your copies by the end of the week (or a few days later, if you are in US / Australia / Japan) please contact us and let us know.

Coming up next on Balkan Vinyl are full albums from Posthuman (August 2nd) and Global Goon (late 2010), both to be released in our vinyl+CD format, plus we are putting together a little limited edition t-shirt & compilation CD package…more on that later.

Who were your greatest influences when you first began, and who or what influences you now?

The 3egg3 sound was my eggfluence later I went on to be eggspired by jack frost/eggdonis and the acid buddah.

If you weren’t writing music, what would you probably be doing?

Building a pyramid out of egg boxes which would revolve and blast out MacAcid music to all who pass and party.

How did you hook up with Balkan Vinyl?

They caught me in their nets while fishing for eggs.

What other artists are you listening to or excited by currently?

I don’t listen to music I only get eggsited by aw things oval

What is your favourite biscuit?

Loveggly biscuits.

What’s your opinion on the current state of the music industry?

Aw DJs are shit, aw labels are shit, aw promoters are shit, new teggnolgy is shit…kissegg ma macacid.

What is your proudest achievement, musically?

Working with A Guy Called Gerald / Vince Clarke, and havegging the operchancity to remix the greatest acid tune eggver…the space mix of I’ve Lost Control by Sleezy D

How did the 2000’s treat you?

The samegg way eggvery year does with lots of macacid and macdrugs

Interview with Hrdvsion

April 11th, 2010

Who are you, and where are you from?

My name is Hrdvsion and I come from Frances and Paul Jonson… It’s very rare to have them as parents. Only two other people in the world do.

How did you first start out writing & releasing music?

To start writing music you first have to….yadda yaddaaaayackity yack…..but once you finish that it’s only natural to want to write music and create.

If you weren’t writing music, what would you probably be doing?
What would you want to be doing?

Pottery…or sleeping. There is a lot of money in sleeping. I’m working on a very specialized adult site directed at satisfying the unquenchable thirst that is the fetish of watching someone sleep. It’s my Plan B.

How did you hook up with Balkan Vinyl?

The old “is that a banana in your pocket”…

What other artists are you listening to or excited by currently?
Mayer Hawthorne, Jules Chaz, ….slow stuff… those cinematic remixes of the pop tunes on youtube… er…. vimeo… http://vimeo.com/8026575 rad rad rad

What is your favourite biscuit?

Digestives

What’s your opinion on the current state of the music industry, how it is affected by and can it react & adapt to piracy, new technology, and the change in distribution and availability?

I have never been too concerned about the business side of music. It only makes it harder to create something pure. I don’t care if someone “steals” an mp3 of my music because they aren’t taking anything from me. Artists will always exist and work hard on what they love. That’s the side I love and it has no threat of being killed. MP3’s on the other hand…were never alive. I want to rest and stay a few steps behind people on this jump into the future, for when the rug of technology is pulled out from underneath their feet, someone needs to be there to catch them. A blind reliance of an exponential force will only bring devolution.

What is your proudest achievement, musically?

I am very proud of the releases I have on Wagon Repair and what is to come for 2010. Also I’m very thankful to be able to play and travel around the world.

How did the 2000’s treat you?

Well….No sex tapes of me leaked onto the internet so I can’t complain. The last day of the 2000’s was incredible as well. Berlin New Years Eve…I felt like I was inside of a bomb.

What software & hardware do you use, and what instruments do you play?

I use math and atoms in a way that appears to be “free will” …The situation is just so complex that It appears as though it is choice rather than an exact outcome. I am me so I do as I will do. 1 beginning 1 path 1 end. a line so fine…sorry what did you say?

What have you got happening now or in the near future?

An EP for Living Records, and an Album for Wagon Repair which I am very excited about!!

Hrdvsion appears on Balkan ORANGE
plus on remix duties on Balkan VIOLET

Interview with Richard Wigglesworth (aka Tudor Acid)

April 11th, 2010

Who are you, and where are you from?

My name’s Richard Wigglesworth, I’ve lived in Bristol for 7 years, via Hertfordshire and Sheffield – and tonight, Matthew, I’m going to be one half of Luke Vibert & Richard Wigglesworth

How did you first start out writing & releasing music?

Got into synths and Roland drum machines when I was a wee strip of a school lad, got more serious in Sheffield.

Released a limited 7″ as Hysteresis in 2002 which John Peel played at the right speed.

In 2009 I set up my record label Tudor Acid.

Who were your greatest influences when you first began, and who or what influences you now?

Stuff like New Order I grew up with, but the REAL big f**k-off kick up the arse came from seeing Autechre, Sabres Of Paradise and LFO live in Sheffield in 1994!

If you weren’t writing music, what would you probably be doing?

Never thought of that before – I’d like to spend my time somewhere cold and remote mountaineering and filiming the scenery on super 8 film.  But have been getting into Martial Arts (Shorinji Kempo) recently so probably I’d progress a bit faster at that.

How did you hook up with Balkan Vinyl?

I did some gigs at I Love Acid, and then when Luke Vibert promised Balkan Vinyl a track, he gave them the one we did in Bristle.

What other artists are you listening to or excited by currently?

The Doubtful Guest – it’s seriously addictive gabba.
Luke’s new one is awesome.
My hot tip for 2010 is GOSH who runs “All Your Base Are Belong To Us” in Reading. He’s an amazing producer who properly cares about what he does.

What is your favourite biscuit?

Custard Cream. Actually wait, no, Party rings. I can eat a whole pack in 5 mins.

What’s your opinion on the current state of the music industry, how it is affected by and can it react & adapt to piracy, new technology, and the change in distribution and availability?

I think it means that it is harder to get people’s attention as there is a lot of stuff out there, and I think a lot of music gets half-listened too.
It shouldn’t matter too much if you love what you do and are doing what you love, but that’s a mite idealistic… :-/

My main concern with music is that there are so many re-releases, so many remasters, it’s as if fans and producers and labels are constantly looking and striving for the ‘perfect’ definitive version of the same album which has already done well, why rewrite history? It’s kind of a never ending quest for perfection which is flawed in its aims and objectives. Although I do love the Kraftwerk remasters, maybe it is justified in that case :-/

Anyway, sorry, that’s not really the question you were asking.

What is your proudest achievement, musically

Probably my new album ‘Merri Portland’

How did the 2000’s treat you?

At the beginning pretty crap, then slightly better, then interesting and kind of sweet, then boring but kind of fun, followed by really good and increasingly exciting ending with a sense of “Shit! lots of work to do. This is serious, got to work hard.”

Good though.

How do you write music – do you have a method or any habits or traditions?

I generally write all the time, but I kind of had a slight hiatus while I was putting together promotion and ting for the Merri Portland album and other label stuff,  so kind of a relief to be back into it now.

I generally start with a drum beat or a nice keyboard sound/riff or acid line.

What software & hardware do you use?

I don’t use computers much, I am more into electronic instruments with a nice physical interface – 808, 303 (obviously!) 909 and Machinedrum.  I also built a DiY kit acid box recently.

What have you got happening now or in the near future?

The Merri Portland album on out now Tudor Acid,  also have Tudor Acid remix EP on 12″ vinyl coming out, with mixes by Luke Vibert and Radioactive man.
